A California high school has punished older students who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 by banning them from attending their graduation ceremony.
what are the details
Granada Hills Charter High School is holding its graduation ceremony on Thursday. Unfortunately, 70 seniors out of about 1,100 seniors will not go with their classmates because they are not vaccinated against COVID-19.
Last fall, the Granada Hills Charter, modeled on the Los Angeles Unified School District, announced a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students and staff. But while LAUSD has repeatedly delayed enforcing its mandate (now no earlier than July 2023), Granada Hills Charter officials chose to enforce their mandate.
Since the beginning of the spring semester, students who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 have been barred from on-campus classes, and seniors have been barred from prom, senior awards day, and other school events.
Eventually, they are prevented from attending the graduation ceremony in person – even though the ceremony is held Outside, according to the school’s website. Guests are also required to provide proof of vaccination.
“I feel like I deserve these events, like Grad Night, the prom,” said senior student Andrew Luna said the Los Angeles Daily News. “I spent all four years at this school. For her [these events] of me in my last moment, which is obviously annoying.”
Students barred from attending the graduation ceremony can “attend” remotely, the Daily News reported.
What does the school say?
A protest was held outside Granada Hills Charter High School on Tuesday, with parents expressing anger at the “egregious discrimination” of school policies, KTLA-TV reported.

Unfortunately, school officials are defending their policy, claiming in a statement that it is “in the best interests of our students, who are all attending voluntarily as the GHC is a school of choice.”
“Our community has called for and overwhelmingly supported our student immunization policy, as evidenced by our 99% immunization rate among those eligible for vaccination,” the statement added. “Our Board stands by the science showing that vaccination is the most effective and effective tool available to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safest possible learning environment.”
Shockingly, the school even banned special students from attending the graduation ceremony.
