This month, Oscar winner Hilary Swank returns to television to star as Eileen Fitzgerald in ABC’s new drama series. Alaska Daily. Once a high-profile investigative journalist in New York, Eileen leaves her big city life behind to move to Anchorage, Alaska, where she uncovers a mystery and restores her reputation with a daily newspaper. Ahead of the series premiere, Swank spoke about her character and what drives Eileen in the exciting saga.
What is the Alaska Daily about? Is it based on a true story?
After a “disgrace” such as Alaska Daily Summary is, Eileen struggles to keep her journalism career going. Then she stumbles upon an opportunity for a fresh start in Anchorage. She moves there to investigate a cold case involving a local woman who went missing when she was a teenager and was later killed. Eileen is intrigued by the mystery as she uncovers several other cold cases, all affecting local women, and vows to give them the attention they deserve.

The characters of Alaska Daily are fictional, but the story is inspired by real cases of missing Alaskan Native women. Kyle Hopkins and Ryan Binkley, two real-life reporters at Anchorage Daily News, serve as executive producers and offer real perspective in investigating these cases.

Hilary Swank teases her ‘Alaska Daily’ character Eileen Fitzgerald
In a recent interview with Parade, Swank described Eileen as a “no-nonsense” person. Despite challenges and threats in Anchorage, the journalist is determined to bring justice to these missing women. She doesn’t let anyone get in her way.
“She doesn’t tolerate fools. I don’t think she’s being rude; She’s very New York, very no-nonsense, and she calls people, which she thinks is BS,” Swank said. “She is intent on continuing to reveal that the article she wrote was true, that her source was good, and to continue to engage with this particular investigation.”
Swank said the unfair nature of the common cold is what drew Eileen to Alaska in the first place.
“When she goes to dinner with her old boss, who is courting her to come to Alaska, Eileen sees pictures of these women and, as she begins to research, understands that this is a huge, horrific situation and nobody is investigating. Another woman disappears and is forgotten, and another,” added Swank. “Even saying that gives me goosebumps. There is no world where that should ever happen, especially now in 2022.”
Alaska Daily is Hilary Swank’s first network television venture in 20 years
Alaska Daily also marks a major change of scenery for Swank himself. While her career has included starring roles in several films and streaming television shows, the writers of liberty The actor hasn’t acted on television for 20 years. Her last major television series was Beverly Hills, 90210in which she played Carly Reynolds.
Speaking to Deadline, Swank revealed what attracted her Alaska Daily: The need for truth. She said:
“You know, I love people and I love what makes them tick. And I love people who endure adversity. i love outsiders I love the outsider. What makes us all one person? At the heart of these stories is that everyone just wants to be seen and that everyone deserves justice. I think a lot of the roles I choose have that theme in one way or another and I feel like Eileen Fitzgerald is a truth seeker. She is an investigative truth seeker and wants to make sure justice is done and people see the truth in situations. I feel like that is in line with what the people of the world want right now, they don’t want to be lied to anymore.”
