Horror movies have been pouring out of Hollywood for a long time, and one caught interest a long time ago. Far away is a 1986 film that started a new trend among fans who can’t help but rave about how cheesy and gory it is. After all, that’s what every horror fan wants.
Directed by Stuart Gordon and starring Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton and Ted Sorel, the film’s storyline takes fans on a virtual reality journey. Back in 1986, of course, they had no idea what that actually meant. They called it perceivable reality and fears from back then have surfaced.
When an obsessive doctor is murdered, an investigation is underway that takes the film to a realm no one understands. The new life that renewed fan interest has blessed it with has come at a time when some of the latest horror movies can’t scratch the tantalizing itch for some good old terrifying storylines and heartbreaking horrors.
Who doesn’t love to overdo it and do it badly at the same time? There are stars, and then there are actors who will go down in history for their over the top acting skills and the stars Far away at the top of this list.
There’s no denying that the movie is creepy. Of course it is. But somehow, in the midst of all its elaborate gore and psychological tickling, it manages to be funny too.
fans of Far away have reservations about recommending it to someone they know. That’s because the horror fan who loves this movie doesn’t want anyone to know his hidden dark side. “Throbbing meatbags” and “extra appendages” don’t even begin to explain how sadistic this movie gets.
In 1986, this could easily be one of those films that transported fans to the world of horror. Commentators keep coming back to the hospital scenes that broke people’s brains. One gets caught up in the body horror while the other gets stuck in the sex scenes. It has something for everyone.
It’s a well-known fact that the budget that goes into making a film is a major determinant of its success. And yet, Far away still reigns supreme despite a tiny budget, which impresses today’s horror fans.
When a film from the past has the ability to reach into the future and touch horror fans directly in their psyche, it’s definitely worth seeing. It’s available for free on Pluto and is hands down the perfect movie to start your Halloween binge watch session.
