We’re sorry, house of the dragon: To me, the ship you officially launched in Sunday’s episode just isn’t sailing.
Those who have seen the hour know that it ended with the marriage of Rhaenyra Targaryen to her uncle Daemon Targaryen, a moment I remember think we should applaud. Or have warm feelings about. Or so. (Read a full synopsis of the episode here.)
See I’m over the fact that he’s her biological uncle because Targaryens have Targaryen blah blah Aegon the Conqueror bliddy blah. And whether Rhaenyra has made peace with her story – aka the last time she saw him when she was a teenager he left her panting and pantless in a King’s Landing brothel – is probably not for me to judge.
But I do! Largely because the show’s decision to skip Westerosi’s storyline in Season 1 feels like it hollowed out the relationship between Rhaenyra and Daemon — or at least relied too heavily on viewers’ imaginations to fill in the blanks . Matt Smith and Milly Alcock had undeniable chemistry in the first few episodes of the season, and he was great on Emma D’Arcy in the final hour too. But did I have a strong feeling that either Daemon or Rhaenyra longed for the other in the decade they spent apart? nope And let her confess from loaded looks at the funeral to walks on the beach to having sex in the sand to fake your hub’s death actually killing someone else, the dragon bride is coming within 58 minutes? Vhagar, take the wheel!
A few more thoughts:
* As the holidays begin (a light fast for those watching this week), I will be attending my family gatherings and channeling the Daemon scene in the Hall of Nine, where Alicent demands that Luke lose an eye. Uncle D just stands back and watches the commotion with an amused look on his face. “Can you believe this nonsense?” his gentle pose and slight smile seem to say. And just like Daemon, I will only intervene in moments of heightened family emotion when it looks like bloodshed is imminent.
* Speaking of that scene, I watched it multiple times to see who moved first in this interaction between Daemon and Criston. I thought Criston stopped Daemon from coming to Rhaenyra’s aid, but some of you didn’t see it that way.
*I’m glad Rhaenyra wasn’t part of a plan to have Laenor killed; anything we’d seen of the affection between them up to that point wouldn’t have fitted. Though I feel sorry for the guy Daemon decided would make a good replacement corpse.
What thoughts/questions/predictions do she have after this week house of the dragon?
