I’m not saying we are. I do not know. There will hopefully be more seasons of this show, so it’s not off the table.”
House of the Dragon will not invent scenes just to depict more sexual violence
The rape scenes in game of Thrones are from the books of George RR Martin. house of the dragon based on his Fire & Blood, so Hess said they certainly won’t add anything that wasn’t there just to have more sexual violence on the show. “We didn’t feel the need to include things that weren’t in the book,” Hess said. “It’s definitely a part of the world and something we won’t shy away from if it needs to, but I think there needs to be a lot of thought about how it’s portrayed.”
The show deals with the oppression of women
Hess also pointed this out house of the dragon is about patriarchy. Rhaenyra is the rightful heir to the throne of King Viserys (Paddy Considine), but Westeros is unwilling to accept a queen. Hess is interested in how patriarchy oppresses women.
“I think it’s also a more nuanced point to say that you don’t have to be raped to be oppressed and traumatized,” Hess said. “I think I’m more interested in the more subtle ways it plays out.”
