The ones from Disney+ She-Hulk: Lawyer kicked off his season finale with a cold open that eerily mimicked the TV show opening credits The incredible Hulkwhich ran for five seasons on CBS and played Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.
Part of the reason the tribute was so retro-perfect was that current elements from the original series were incorporated into the film-making process.
Speaking to TVLine on Friday, Kat Coiro, who directed the finale (as well as episodes 1-4 and 8), said “there were a couple of backing records that we ended up licensing” from the late 1970s/early ‘Universal Television co-production and Marvel Comics from the ’80s, “but we made our own original versions of everything.”
She Hulk Lead writer Jessica Gao told TVLine that’s spot on Incredible Hulk Homage was one of her two favorite things about the finale (the other being our meeting with KEVIN).
“I can’t believe we had to do it and we did So beautifully done,” Gao gushed. “Our leader of the second unit, Mo[nique] Ganderton directed most of it, if not all of it, and it just looks that way So Great. The editors did such a good job of making it feel just right.”
in the homage, She Hulk Star Tatiana Maslany essentially played the role of Bill Bixby — gamma-ray chair, glowing green eyes and all — while one of Maslany’s Hulk stand-ins, Devon Lewis, picked up where Lou Ferrigno left off.
Meanwhile, MCU veteran Mark Ruffalo appears in a cutaway reminiscent of the infamous “You wouldn’t like me if I was angry” duel between Bixby’s Dr. David Banner and Jack Colvin’s intrepid reporter Jack McGee.
“Oh my god, me loved it,” Maslany told TVLine this afternoon. “It was so much fun playing that sequence, and of course, when you’re pulling straight from something, it’s a way of leaning into that style.
“To mark [Ruffalo] and I really enjoyed it, it was really special,” Maslany added. “Again, it really lives in this world as meta is [She-Hulk] world is.”
