How to download twitter archive

Many users want to find a way to download and record all the tweets they’ve ever sent. Here’s how to do just that.

AUSTIN, Texas – Some Twitter Ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter, users have been asking, “How do I download my Twitter archive?”

The Twitter archive is a ZIP file containing a copy of every single tweet a user has ever sent in the history of their account. These tweets may be useful to have as a copy for those working in journalism who have covered topics ranging from breaking news to sensitive material that highlight key points of their own creative work.

There were concerns on Twitter that the site could become unavailable in the future after new owner Elon Musk began mass layoffs of engineers and executives within the company. This has prompted many users to download their Twitter archives in case the site goes away.

How to download your twitter archive

You must first be on the desktop version of Twitter to download your archive. If you’re looking at the desktop version, navigate to the three dots in the bottom-left corner of the screen just above the pen icon (where you would compose a tweet).

From there, click “Settings & Support” and then click the “Settings & Privacy” drop-down menu. This should be the first option you can click.

Once in this section, you can choose from a variety of different options related to your account, monetization, and accessibility. Select the first option above labeled “My Account” and you should get a side menu on the right side of the screen:

From this menu select the third drop down option called “Download an archive of your data”. You must confirm that this is your account by logging in with your password. Once this is done, you will receive a notification that the archive will take at least 24 hours to be created, and you will then have about a week to download the archive once it is created. You will need to enter a verification code that will be sent to either your email address or phone number in order to download it as part of the verification process.

Once you have access to your Twitter data, there are many files to unzip and understand. You have a .zip file that contains three different items:

  • Your archive in .html format
    • This acts as a file on your computer that looks like the Twitter website, but it’s just a digital file on your computer
    • The file log in the browser line looks like this: /Users/Downloads
  • Data
  • media

The downside of twitter’s archive is that every link you get is through twitter, which means if twitter is deleted tomorrow, your links will be deleted too. to have access all your tweet data, You need to know a little Python coding.

Python is a programming language that parses or analyzes all your data for what it is. Once you run the code, every single image you’ve ever tweeted will be associated with every link and reply you’ve ever sent in your Twitter account’s history.

To use the related code that can be found here by a GitHub programmer named Tim Hutton, you need to download the latest version of Python from his website. The website tells you exactly how to do it in four steps (it’s easier than it looks).

After Python has been downloaded to your computer, save this code link in the same files folder as your three Twitter assets and run the code by clicking Run in the command bar at the top of your computer. You must enter “y” as in “yes” several times to agree to the code procurement of your data.

Once the program is running, you will have saved a new Twitter archive named “TwitterArchive.html” in the same folder every single tweet you’ve ever sent, with all the accompanying images.
