Hulu Cuts Justin Roiland From Solar Opposites, Koala Man

Both series are expected to continue without the involvement of the disgraced creator.

Following Adult Swim’s announcement that it would sever ties with Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland, Hulu followed suit, removing the disgraced creator from its animated shows on the platform. Roiland was cut from “Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man” by the streamer, the company announced Jan. 25.

“We have ended our collaboration with Justin Roiland,” 20th TV Animation and Hulu Originals said in a statement to IndieWire. Prior to the announcement, Roiland had an overall deal with 20th TV Animation to develop new animation projects for the studio.

Both shows are expected to continue without Roiland’s involvement, similar to Rick and Morty. This Adult Swim animated series currently has 40 more episodes ordered from Adult Swim and is expected to recast the two title characters, both previously played by Roiland.

Roiland created and produced Solar Opposites, starring Mike McMahan and voicing one of the main characters; The series premiered in 2020 and aired its third season last July. Created by Michael Cusack and premiered earlier this month, Koala Man was executive produced by Roiland, who also guest-starred in one episode. The creator lacks writing credits for both shows aside from the pilot episode of Solar Opposites.

On January 12, Roiland was charged in Orange County, California, with one felony count of assault and false imprisonment by threat, violence, fraud and/or deception. The charges stem from an incident in 2020 against an unnamed woman who Roiland was dating at the time. According to Variety, Roiland was previously released on August 13, 2020 on $50,000 bail and was charged on October 14, 2020. Roiland pleaded not guilty in 2020 and appeared in court for a pre-trial hearing on January 12, 2023. A date for the hearing has not yet been set.

Adult Swim, which produces and broadcasts Roiland’s “Rick and Morty,” released a statement on Jan. 24 via its official Rick and Morty Twitter account, confirming that the channel has severed all ties with Roiland and continues to do so series that Roiland has collaborated with “Community” creator Dan Harmon.

“Adult Swim has ended his relationship with Justin Roiland,” the tweet reads. “‘Rick and Morty’ will continue. The talented and dedicated crew is hard at work on Season 7.”

“Solar Opposites” has already been renewed for a fourth and fifth season, but a premiere date has yet to be announced. Koala Man has not yet been renewed. It’s unclear if Roiland’s characters will be written off the shows or simply recast with new voice actors.
