LOS ANGELES — Hulu’s new series Tell Me Lies follows the turbulent love story of Lucy and Stephen who meet in college and continue their toxic relationship over the course of 8 years. Over time, her entanglement has serious effects not only on herself but also on those around her.
“I fell in love with him right away because he reminded me of all my favorite movies and movies I really wanted to do,” Grace Van Patten, who plays Lucy, tells On the Red Carpet, “just like a toxic romance shows love in a different light.”
“It was the complexity,” says Jackson White of his character Stephen. “I’ve rarely seen that in a story about people of that age where you can get into the nuances of who they are and how they function.”
Executive producer Meaghan Oppenheimer says Tell Me Lies is a cautionary tale for a young love that she hopes will spark important conversations.
“I think a lot of times we don’t really take these characters seriously and we don’t take a relationship seriously at 18, but really, those are the relationships that build you for the rest of your life,” says Oppenheimer. “I think it’s actually a very important phase to talk about.”
Tell Me Lies premieres September 7th on Hulu.
