“Hypnotic” Trailer: Ben Affleck stars in the Robert Rodriguez film

Robert Rodriguez is directing the surreal psychological thriller out May 12.

Ben Affleck is dealing with another missing girl.

The ‘Air’ star director helms Robert Rodriguez’s surreal psychological thriller ‘Hypnotic.’ Affleck stars as a detective who spirals down a rabbit hole as he investigates a series of reality-bending crimes that are mysteriously linked to his missing daughter, according to the official synopsis. Aided by a gifted psychic, he is stalked by a deadly specter who he believes holds the key to finding his daughter… but more rabbit holes await.

The Gone Girl actor is joined by Alice Braga, JD Pardo, Hala Finley, Dayo Okeniyi, Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley and William Fichtner in the ensemble cast.

Director Rodriguez has been open about wanting to make “Hypnotic” for two decades. Production was halted three times during the COVID-19 pandemic and the film was hit with an insurance lawsuit when its main financier and distributor Solstice went under. “Hypnotic” spent two years in post-production without a US buyer, according to Deadline. Ketchup Entertainment will oversee the limited theatrical release.

Rodriguez told the outlet that the film faced “otherworldly” challenges and the script was “changed daily to complete it.”

“Hypnotic” was shown as a “work in progress” at SXSW earlier this year.

“We’re going to fly,” Rodriguez said before the demonstration. “I spoke to Ben and said, ‘Ben man, it’s going back to that ’90s wildness! Remember when we used to shoot fast and loose, guerrilla style, by hand, walking around, 22 day shoot. I was so glad I had Ben, Ben is the best. He said, ‘Yeah man, I’ve been standing around the sets for so long, I didn’t think anyone else would take pictures like that.’ Well, we have no choice.”

The filmmaker compared “Hypnotic” to Hitchcock thrillers like “Psycho” and “Vertigo”.

“I’ve been working on this film for many years now, and to see the response from my hometown audience at SXSW has been humbling and affirming,” Rodriguez said at the festival. “I’m looking forward to sharing it now with all movie lovers who want to experience crazy driving fun full of unexpected twists.”

“Hypnotic” opens in cinemas on May 12th.
