“I still don’t want the job”

Tom Petty was the leader of the Heartbreakers from the mid-1970s until his death in 2017. It was a role he filled well; The band thrived for decades and his bandmates agreed he was a solid leader. However, according to Petty, the role was never what he wanted to take on. As it turned out, it wasn’t a role he particularly wanted either. Decades after leading the Heartbreakers, Petty explained that he never really wanted the job.
