Idris Elba Once Channeled Real Heartbreak To Film Emotional ‘Luther’ Scene: ‘I Was In Tears’
Actor Idris Elba had many memorable and iconic scenes in the hit TV series Luther. But there was one scene in the show’s earlier seasons that hit Elba particularly hard.
Elba used genuine sadness for the scene in question, eventually taking his character John Luther to a very emotional place.

As many may know, Elba spoke about an emotional and troubling time in his life. The actor was in a serious relationship with a woman he met in Florida. His then-girlfriend would eventually become pregnant and give birth to a boy, who Elba assumed was his biological child. At the time, Elba was thrilled with the news.
“The celebration of having a son — from a man’s perspective, it’s huge,” he once said in an interview with GQ.
He had even told friends, family and other publications about the news. But Elba later learned from another party that the child may not have been his. It was something he suspected, noting that there was very little resemblance between himself and the newborn.
“It wasn’t immediately obvious – well, it was because he didn’t look like me,” Elba said. “But it wasn’t immediately apparent what had happened.”
A paternity test would later confirm the suspicion of an upset Elba.
“Getting that and then having it taken away so hard,” he continued. “[It] was like a direct hit in the face: POW.”

Elba was not overwhelmed by the incident. Instead the animal Star dusted himself off and used what happened as a learning experience.
“I got the fuck up again, and I don’t plan on ever taking another slap in the face again. Do you understand what I’m saying? it happened to me I moved on,” he added.
But Elba also pulled from the incident in other ways. When shooting a scene in Luther, Elba could not help but use the real feelings he had from this experience. The script prompted John Luther to be angry after the character went through a similar situation as Elba.
“And you have to understand that I’ve just gone through the worst of my life, you know,” Elba said.
The result was a highly emotional sequence that also proved cathartic for the megastar.
“So Luther cI’ve come to a time where it’s been gaga therapy for me, man. Stupid. I thought, “I’m going in…” And that’s exactly what I did. I’ll tell you: I took this shot and I remember the room… Indira Varma, the beautiful Indian actress – beautiful girl… The crew was at that end of the room, all crammed together. Indira was over there. And I fucking let go,” he said.
The moment not only affected Elba himself, but also his co-star and love interest.
“Like all kinds of shit happened in my head. I mean – lightning. Fuck that door, I mean fuck that fucking door. The emotion lasted so long after the actual fucking scene was over that everyone sat in silence. Indira was in tears; I was in tears,” he said.
Idris Elba uses “Luther” for therapy
Elba has become quite used to channeling certain real-life feelings or ailments Luther. So much that The cable Star once felt like being therapeutic in the shoes of John Luther.
“I always go to Luther When I’m at my grumpiest – when I’m feeling like shit, it’s time to play something Luther‘ he once said at a press conference, according to Digital Spy. “I use John Luther as a kind of therapy session – and I think that’s good for that [writer] Also Neil Cross. We both use it as a cathartic experience.”
