I’m “proud” for saying “Conscious Decoupling.”

No regret. Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that while she and her ex-husband Chris Martin were criticized for using the phrase “conscious uncoupling” when they split in 2014, she still thinks that’s the best term.

“I definitely didn’t coin the phrase, but I feel like we took quite a bit of shit for it when we first announced this all those years ago,” the Goop founder, 50, shared on Friday April 28, via Instagram Story with , after a fan asked how she felt about “having her credit for coining the phrase.”

Paltrow continued, “I’m very proud that maybe we’ve been able to make some divorces a little bit easier [or] happier. It makes me quite proud when people come up to me on the street and say, ‘Thanks for introducing this concept because I’ve become good friends with my ex.’ I am very pleased that we were able to contribute a small part to this cultural change.”

The iron man The actress and Martin, now 46, split in 2014 after 10 years of marriage. The former couple – who share 18-year-old daughter Apple and 16-year-old son Moses – finalized their divorce in 2016.

They announced their split in a joint statement at the time: “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We’ve been working hard for well over a year, partly together, partly apart, to see what would have been possible between us and we’ve come to the conclusion that although we love each other dearly, we will remain apart. We’ve always kept our relationship private, and we hope that as we consciously decouple and co-parent, we’ll be able to continue in the same way.”

Her statement made the term go viral and they’ve since made headlines for their comfortable post-divorce friendship.

The Oscar winner said that despite their split, the Coldplay frontman is still “completely my family.” “And he would do anything for me,” she said in a September 2022 interview CBS Sunday morning. “I would do anything for him. He would do anything for our children. We are truly committed to our children being as unharmed as possible from the divorce.”

After her divorce from the Grammy winner, Paltrow moved on as a producer Brad Fallukand they tied the knot in September 2018. For his part, the “Yellow” singer is dating Dakota Johnson on and off since 2017.

As Martin and the fifty shades of gray Star, 33, briefly separated in 2019, Paltrow was the person who encouraged her to reconcile. “Gwyneth is the one who pushed her into this,” a source said exclusively Us weekly in August 2019. “Gwyneth is happy when Chris is happy.”

Martin isn’t the only ex Paltrow is friends with. When a fan asked via Instagram in December 2022 if she was friends with any of her ex-boyfriends, Paltrow said she was “fairly” friends with most of them.

“I really believe in conscious decoupling,” she wrote at the time. “When you spend meaningful time with someone, it’s nice when a friendship develops out of it. I don’t want to have bad blood with anyone, ever (if I can help it).”
