‘Impossible’ director fuels Superman movie rumors with intentionally vague infidelities

Say what you want James Gunn, but he is a master at creating intrigue. As we await his take on Man of Steel, one potential director had an interesting, intentionally vague, response to rumors he’ll be taking the helm superman reboot.

In response to a tweet that he should direct Gunn’s Superman movie, Christopher McQuarrie gave a pretty clever answer that seemed to avoid the problem altogether.

While he clearly hasn’t thrown his hat in the DCU ring, he didn’t say no, but rather a “not now,” which raises eyebrows.

Famous for his work on Tom Cruise action thrillers Jack Reacher and the two youngest Impossible Mission movies, villain nation and Stand outwhich also starred Henry Cavill, McQuarrie was the subject of Superman movie rumors for years.

What does Pom Klementieff have to do with it? After I played Mantis at Gunn’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Specialshe will reprise the role next year GOTG Vol 3. She just so happens to be starring alongside Cruise in McQuarrie’s next film Impossible Mission Movie, Dead Reckoning: Part One.

The beginning of a new DC studio

Superhero cinema rules the box office landscape with an iron fist. While Marvel Studios has reigned supreme for over a decade, Warner Bros. Discovery is hoping its latest venture will create a worthy contender for the crown. If nothing else, it’s definitely gotten the DCU more attention than ever.

In November, Gunn and Peter Safran took over at the helm of DC Studios and immediately made waves. While Gunn teases potential projects on social media, the dynamic duo have spent the last month cutting ties with the Snyder-verse. Along with Jason Momoa possibly swapping DCU roles and wonder woman 3After the cancellation, they parted ways with Cavill. In fact, the McQuarrie-Superman connection with Cavill began on the set of 2018 MI: Fallout.

The director, who has also written screenplays for such acclaimed films as The usual suspects and Top Gun: Maverickhad said that he and Cavill were proposing one man of steel 2 concept and a Green Lantern film to Warner Bros. Pictures Stand out‘s publication. In a 2019 tweet, he wrote, “They never said no. They just never moved on. That was just before Stand out was published. And no, I wouldn’t reconsider.”

After seemingly disinterested in McQuarrie’s ideas, the former WB blasters sounded a bit dejected as he also tweeted, “The studios never took an interest in my original ideas. They prefer that I fix their broken ones.”

Though he said he wouldn’t reconsider collaborating with Warner Bros. Pictures on a Superman or Green Lantern film, this marks the beginning of a new era in the DCU. With Gunn and Safran in charge, it stands to reason that McQuarrie might get his chance to bring his vision of the Man of Steel to life.
