In Orange County, devotees flock to church to celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) — People of all ages celebrated the Virgin of Guadalupe at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Santa Ana on Monday.

Alex Miranda stopped at the church to pay his respects and deliver flowers.

“Today is her birthday and she is the patron saint of Mexico. We have to come here to pay our respects to her,” Miranda said.

For some Catholics, the Virgin of Guadalupe is an integral part of their home and faith.

Juan Torres said that he believes the Virgin of Guadalupe gives peace and protection to all who believe in her.

Churchgoers believe in their power to perform miracles.

Miriam Alcaraz brought her family to church.

“This year my baby was born and he had a little problem with his kidney so I prayed to her. I asked her to help me get better and he actually did it,” Alcaraz said.

Elizabeth Vergara took her children to church to celebrate.

“I come every year. It’s like a promise I made,” Vergara said.

Church leaders expect a steady stream of people to come and be in their presence throughout the day.

“The devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe is truly amazing. She is the strongest.” Father Jose Troncoso said.

The tributes to the Virgin of Guadalupe continued into the evening.

For some people it is an opportunity to reflect and honor the blessings she has bestowed upon them.

“It’s such a beautiful experience. It’s something I grew up with. There is something really beautiful in your heart,” said Alcaraz. “At the moment I was praying to her and I wanted to cry.”
