Indiana Jones premieres May 18 at the Cannes Film Festival

Fedoras could accompany tuxedos on the Croisette this year! Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will premiere on May 18th.
It has been a few years and many miles since the world’s most famous fictional archaeologist took the Croisette by storm. But Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, exactly 15 years ago when Kingdom of the Crystal Skull premiered there.
The final installment in the franchise will premiere in cinemas everywhere on June 30, but critics will get their first look at the film, directed by James Mangold, at the world’s most prestigious film festival.
Mangold said: “In 1995 I had the privilege of coming to Cannes with my first film as part of Director’s Fortnite. 28 years later, I’m proud to return with a slightly bigger spectacle. My legendary staff and I are so excited to share with you a brand new and final Indiana Jones adventure!”
Little is known about Dial of Destiny other than that it will alternate between a late ’60s setting and flashbacks to WWII – all the better for Indy to take down the Nazis in classic Raiders and Last Crusade Manner – powered by CGI rejuvenation techniques were first developed in TRON: Legacy and The Irishman.
Dial of Destiny also stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies (Sallah from Raiders and Last Crusade!), Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore and Mads Mikkelsen.
Legacy seems to be paramount in Dial of Destiny. Something Indy did during WWII haunts him decades later, and some Nazis who have never been brought to justice are after him. Could there be a time travel element as well? We will see!
Mangold took over directing, the first time anyone other than Steven Spielberg has helmed an Indy film. He brings his writers from his last feature, Ford v Ferrari, Jez and John Henry Butterworth, to co-write the screenplay with David Koepp. John Williams, 91, wrote the film music as he has done for all previous films.
The first Dial of Destiny trailer was a stunner, distilling the magic of the three original films, particularly Raiders and Last Crusade (although true fans know that Temple of Doom is the best). Watch the trailer below:
