Insomniac “strongly encourages” physical Spider-Man 2 players to download the Day 1 patch

Owners of a physical release of Spider-Man 2 do not need to download the Day 1 patch to fully enjoy it, but Insomniac still strongly recommends fans who choose to purchase the CD install patch 1,001,002 before you start playing.
“The disc contained the entire game and is playable from start to finish with no patch or online requirement,” Insomniac wrote in a statement posted on X. “But for the best experience, we strongly recommend physical/disc-based players to download update version 1,001,002 on launch day – before we could experience the game’s opening for the first time.”

Insomniac says the patch will further improve the game’s opening while providing “general improvements” to the overall experience. The patch will also include additional accessibility options, although Insomniac didn’t elaborate on what those features might be.
If you download the digital version of Spider-Man 2, you’re good to go. Patch 1,001,002 will be included in the pre-installed version of the game.
Day 1 patches have become an important part of the big budget gaming experience
Insomniac’s PSA points to a broader trend in big-budget games. While Spider-Man 2 appears to be fully featured, many other games without a Day 1 patch are broken or featureless. This is a problem for owners of physical releases who want to play without an internet connection.
We wrote in our Spider-Man 2 review: “As a continuation of a spectacular series, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is both blessed and cursed… Insomniac refines a winning formula of combat and web-swinging without sacrificing either fundamentally We make them comfortable and familiar with just enough new tweaks and capabilities to take them to entertaining new heights. The part that feels like it actually needs a radical rethink is the open world of New York City, which has been made bigger but not better, an exhaustive checklist of mostly repetitive side activities.”
Spider-Man 2 releases on PS5 on October 20th. In the meantime, check out our Spider-Man 2 PS5 performance test as well as our testing discussion on the Beyond podcast.
