Internet stunned by dog demanding ‘big hug’ from owner in cute video

Sweet Home Security footage showing a dog greeting its owner with a big hug has gone viral online.

The video was shared on Reddit’s “Aww” forum on Friday by the dog’s owner, u/timeforshade_ok, who wrote, “My dog needs a mature hug as soon as I walk in the door.” It has more than 12,000 upvotes and Received over 170 comments from avid Redditors saying the interaction was one of the “purest” things they’ve ever seen.

In the video, the dog – a Great Pyrenees – jumps on its owner, nearly knocking her over. While the dog is clinging to her owner’s torso, her master manages to brace himself against her kitchen island.

After a few moments, the owner lifts her dog’s paws onto her shoulders and hugs her in a big hug. The dog then puts its nose on its owner’s forehead before finally jumping off.

“This is one of the purest things I’ve ever seen,” wrote u/murphyE927.

“So cute. Enter [her] more attention,” commented u/boisNgyrls.

“That was bloody gorgeous,” said u/RyanTheeShort.

“This is the healthiest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” u/Eirinae admitted.

Redditor u/Twoofingers added, “I could watch a compilation of this happening any day.”

While many commenters loved the video, some argued that the dog was exhibiting “bad behavior.”

“Doesn’t anyone else see this as bad behavior?” asked u/wittyandunoriginal. “Letting them know it’s ok is one thing, but jumping on people as soon as they come in is really, really embarrassing for me as a pet owner.”

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), jumping is a “natural canine behavior” but it can be “dangerous,” so it’s important to discourage dogs from the habit.

“To eliminate jumping from your dog’s greeting repertoire, you must eliminate the rewards associated with it,” the AKC explained. “That means managing your dog so he doesn’t get a chance to practice jumping while you teach him an alternative and more appropriate way to greet people.”

The AKC encouraged owners not only to “ignore” their dogs when they jump, but also to teach them to greet people in other ways.

“How you want your dog to greet people is up to you. You may just want to have all four paws on the ground, or you may want your dog to sit or lie down,” the AKC said. “But remember, you have to tell them what to do, not just what NOT to do.”

In response to u/wittyandunoriginal, the Great Pyrenees owner explained that luckily her dog doesn’t jump on other people.

“The cool thing is that she just hugs me! Guests are greeted much more tactically. But I think if your dog wasn’t able to distinguish between owner and guests it would be considered bad behavior,” she wrote. “Luckily that’s not the case here!”
