There are very few names in Hollywood that are guaranteed to draw a crowd by name alone, and it’s beginning to look that way Margot Robbie will never be one of them as the two-time Oscar nominee has been unleashing a quartet of catastrophic box office bombs since early 2020 alone.
We don’t doubt the star’s talents at all, as the 32-year-old is rightly considered one of the best performers of her generation, while her work behind the camera saw her dive into the production world with aplomb to direct Best Picture contestant Promising young woman to the screen.
However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a worrying trend that has seen the Australian lend her undoubted power to a worrying string of commercial disasters. birds of prey went on an unwanted losing streak in early 2020 after barely squeaking over $200 million worldwide, and any hopes for a sequel or spin-off are all but dead in the water under the new DC Studios regime.
The Suicide Squad took a terrifying tumble last summer, with the R-rated sequel-reboot hybrid nowhere near recouping its mammoth $185 million in-theater budget. David O. Russells Amsterdam and Damien Chazelles Babylon were released just weeks apart – and each originally set as awards season contenders – only for the star-studded couple to instead fight over who will lose the most money in the long run.
Robbie received top billing in both DC projects and took second place in the other two behind Amsterdam‘s Christian Bale and Babylon‘s Brad Pitt, but in the latter case, it was she who was the focus of virtually the entire marketing campaign. On the plus side, we’re pretty sure Barbie will fix the ship next summer, unless of course Oppenheimer stands in the way.
