‘It’s so enriching’: Governor Abbott, first family volunteer with Meals on Wheels in annual tradition

Austin, Texas – Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas and the first family joined Meals on Wheels in Central Texas Distributing Thanksgiving meals.

The governor, along with First Lady Cecilia Abbott and her daughter Audrey, delivered meals as part of their annual tradition with MOWCTX. The organization made a special Thanksgiving delivery in lieu of their regular deliveries, delivering to 500 homes of their most needy customers.

“It’s so rewarding to see the joy people get from being able to socialize with someone else in addition to eating. They’re grateful for the food, but they’re just as grateful to be able to visit someone who comes here,” the governor said.

The MOWCTX CEO said the annual First Family tradition is a great way to connect with older Texans.

“It’s an annual tradition that the Texas governor comes out on Thanksgiving and hands out food. I think it’s a great way to show the spirit and connection that our state’s leader values our older adults here in Austin,” said Henry Vandeputte, CEO of MOWCTX.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, the governor greeted and served food to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) soldiers and members of the Texas National Guard deployed to the Texas-Mexico border during the holiday for Operation Lone Star.

On Thursday morning, Gov. Abbott tweeted wishing Texas a Happy Thanksgiving.

“I am grateful to live in the greatest state of the greatest nation on earth,” the tweet said. “May God continue to bless the Lone Star State.”

MOWCTX said in a press release that it is seeing an increase in operating costs. Inflation, the organization said, has impacted the prices of food and gasoline, which are essential to its mission. Meal costs have increased by 10% per meal, according to a press release.

“This holiday season, we need the support of the central Texas community so we can continue to provide meals to the older adults who need them,” the organization said.
