Jada Pinkett Smith’s Oscar Slap Statement: Will Smith vs. Chris Rock

For the first time since Will Smith beat Chris Rock at the Oscars in March, Jada Pinkett Smith addresses the controversy head-on in a new episode of Facebook Watch Conversation at the Red Table.

As you probably recall – either because you saw the incident live or because the media played the footage incessantly – the slap was in response to a joke Rock had made about Pinkett Smith being bald; She had previously spoken about her struggles with alopecia.

“My deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men will have an opportunity to heal, speak out, and reconcile,” says Pinkett Smith of her husband and Rock. “The state of the world today, we need them both. In fact, we all need each other more than ever. Until then, Will and I will continue to do what we’ve been doing for the past 28 years, which is keep figuring out what’s called life. Thank you for listening.”

This latest Conversation at the Red Table Episode focusing specifically on alopecia was inspired by the reaction Pinkett Smith received from women around the world after the incident at the Oscars.

“Considering what I’ve been through with my own health and what happened at the Oscars, thousands have reached out to me with their stories,” she says at the beginning of the episode. “I’m taking this moment to give our alopecia family the opportunity to talk about what it’s like to have this condition and educate people about what alopecia actually is.”
