He just made one of the most expensive movies of all time, but JamesCameron doesn’t want anyone else to benefit from his brilliance if his brutal refusal to sign autographs is to be believed.
The 190 minutes long Avatar: The Way of Water has its first weekend behind us and the hype has been met, if not exceeded, by mostly positive reviews. Even Cameron’s biggest critics still praised his direction and his crazy vision for his world of blue cat people immensely.
At his core, however, Cameron is still a slightly grumpy 68-year-old man from Canada. After attending a Writer’s Guild of America meeting, fans and scalpers may have waited for hours to receive knick-knacks and items autographed by the famous director. Unfortunately, Jimbo wasn’t in the mood to offer his signature as he walks past them cursing and then retreats to his limousine.
Worse, he’s giving the crowd the middle finger just to really make sure they know exactly how he’s feeling. Never one to follow trends, Cameron was probably busy at that moment thinking about other types of blue-cat people he could pose for avatar 3 before he falls asleep on his billions.
To be fair to Cameron, being stalked after a private event is hardly a pleasant experience – especially since he’s spent the last month on promotional tours and is already doing a ton of that stuff. There’s also a layer of people asking for autographs, possibly just to sell them online, which is arguably a sneaky practice.
But at the end of the day, while he’s working on another potentially nine-hour meeting, Cameron probably doesn’t really care and has far more important things to take care of. That’s not even considering the very real potential of Avatar: The Way of Water not at the box office level of its predecessor or may not break even.
Cameron previously said the film needs to gross $2 billion to turn a profit — a number that has so far deviated from the usual rough estimate of $500 million.
