James Gray wants to do a sequel to Armageddon Time with Anne Hathaway
Gray looked back on his own childhood for the autobiographical Armageddon Time and still believes he has more stories to tell about his mother.
After taking audiences deep into the Amazon rainforest and into outer space with The Lost City of Z and Ad Astra, James Gray looked inward for his latest film, Armageddon Time. The semi-autobiographical film chronicles Gray’s childhood in Queens, paying special attention to his experiences in sixth grade at the prestigious Kew Forest School and his relationship with his grandfather (Anthony Hopkins).
In a new interview with The Playlist, Gray revealed he may not be done telling stories about his own life.
“You know what I would really like to do? I probably shouldn’t admit that publicly just yet,” he said. “But I’m really interested in some kind of ‘[Armageddon Time’] Sequel about what happened to my mom.”
The filmmaker explained that a potential sequel would follow his mother (Anne Hathaway) as she battled brain cancer, something he subtly alluded to in Armageddon Time when her character complained of a headache. Though he hasn’t started writing the sequel yet, he’s hoping to reunite the original cast.
“The story takes place in a very unexpected place because my father did have some financial success, but it all ended up being confiscated by the government when he got into legal trouble. At the same time, my mother learned that she was dying. And that’s what I think will be about that time,” he said. “Hopefully we can do that. So I’ll have to persuade the boys and everyone to come back. The only person who can’t come back is [Anthony Hopkins]but maybe through flashbacks.”
Convincing Hathaway to reprise her role could easily sell, as she praised the experience of working with Gray in a recent interview with IndieWire.
“Oh god, James made me a better actor. I know it sounds kind of exaggerated to say that, but it’s true,” Hathaway said. “He doesn’t let you get away with nonsense for some reason, whether you’re insecure as an actor and like, ‘Okay, I’m going to fill this moment with stuff.’ He just wants the truth from you.”
