After barely getting his feet wet in the role of DC Studios’ co-CEO, James Gunn has already ignited a fire among fandom by contesting Henry Cavill’s Superman as one of his first major decisions.
It would be an understatement of epic proportions to say that the news hasn’t exactly caught a storm among at least half of the franchise’s longtime supporters, but that’s to be expected when DC diehards have been locked in a civil war since Zack Snyder’s original The Mythology became slowly being phased out in favor of one of several failed new beginnings.
As an active social media presence, Gunn’s timeline has become increasingly inundated with bile and negativity pouring out from those unhappy with his first month on the job, and we’re now at a point where he’s not even encouraging his followers to check out performs the sing-along version of the infectious catchy tune “I Don’t Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here)”. The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special without the comments and replies immediately devolving into tribalism.
To be fair, it’s not like The Suicide Squad and peacemaker The creator wasn’t 100 percent aware that this would be part of the job when he agreed to oversee the rebranding, restructuring and rebirth of the DCU alongside Peter Safran, and things will stay just as hot until Dynamics as now Duo reveal their eight to 10 year roadmap for what’s next.
Until then, maybe just enjoy the sing-alongs and get in the Christmas spirit.
