James Gunn Teases ‘Unannounced DC TV Show’ He’s Writing

The new DC Universe will feature a previously unannounced TV series being written by filmmaker and DC Studios co-head James Gunn.

On Thursday night, Gunn hopped on Twitter to summarize what appeared to be a busy day, writing, “My day: wrote 1/3 of an unannounced DC TV show (😃); 100 VFX shots ok, reference acting done for Rocket and editing notes given for volume 3; & had two big meetings at DC Studios.”

Before Gunn took over the helm of DC Studios (formerly DC Films) alongside Peter Safran last November – and in addition to his work for Marvel – Gunn’s DC credits included writing/directing 2021 The Suicide Squad as well as its offshoot HBO Max, peacemaker (streamed in January/February 2022).

Now, almost a year ago, Gunn told Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, “We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that [The Suicide Squad] universe,” but he refrained from sharing even the smallest details. So let’s assume that the Project isn’t the “unannounced” he’s talking about now. (Although it detailsI assume, go unannounced.)

The TV panel from DC is of course included All Types of flux nowadays. Outside of Whatever Gunn and Safran have planned as part of the new DCU they’re sketching, big changes to The CW (and just plain old longevity) have shattered the once-robust Arrowverse. The Lightning enters his final season next month and just leaves behind Superman & Lois and the pending Batman-less Batman series Gotham Knights.

Over on HBO Max, both Titans and Doom Patrol are in the midst of their fourth season; peacemaker was renewed for season 2 a while ago, although there were crickets on that front; Pennyworth Season 3 came and went this fall with little fanfare; and the adult animated hit Harley Quinn has a Valentine’s Day special coming up, on a season 4 for which dialogues were recorded a long time ago.

Meanwhile, in the pipeline is the Green Lantern series for HBO Max, which has recently been revamped; The PenguinOffshoot of Matt Reeves’ The Batman; and as far as anyone knows, JJ Abrams’ Justice League Dark idea.

Without further context from the man himself, what do you think Gunn could write for the smaller screen?
