in the sister wives In Season 17, Janelle Brown is outraged that Kody Brown is asking his daughter, Ysabel Brown, to choose between him and her senior year of high school. She says the whole situation is unfair to Ysabel and that what Kody is asking of his daughter is “ridiculous”. This isn’t the first time Kody’s strict coronavirus (COVID-19) rules have affected his relationship with his daughter Ysabel.
Ysabel wants to attend her senior year of high school in person
In the episode of 25 sister wives, Kody sits down with his wives to discuss how they will move forward as a family with schools reopening.
“Okay, let’s talk about school and COVID-19. The new school policy, what’s up?” Kody, accompanied by Robyn, asks his wives Janelle, Meri and Christine via Zoom call. Kody explains that he would prefer all of his children to attend virtual classes rather than returning in person.
Kody revealed that all of Robyn’s school-age children would virtually go back to school, as would Jannelle’s daughter Savanah. However, Ysabel is looking forward to returning to school for her senior year.
“Ysabel is a senior. After graduating, she doesn’t want to stay in Flagstaff. So she’s always known that, and that’s why she only has a few weeks left with her friends,” Christine explained.
Kody says Ysabel has to choose between him or her senior year
In the episode, Christine directly asks Kody if he would visit her at home and her children Ysabel, Gwendolyn and Truely if their daughter wants to go back to school. Kody said it was her choice but he would not feel comfortable visiting Ysabel for fear of potentially exposing the rest of the family to the coronavirus.
Janelle suggests that Kody seek out Ysabel outdoors, “about six feet apart in the backyard or so” to reduce the potential for spreading the virus.
But Kody didn’t seem too keen on the idea, calling it a major “inconvenience” due to the cold weather. He says he’s ready to do it but doesn’t promise much will happen. He wants Ysabel to realize that her choices have consequences and doesn’t want her to become “bitter” about it.
Janelle is outraged by Kody’s strict COVID-19 rules
A frustrated Janelle can hardly contain her anger as she discusses how upset Kody is at doing the basics for his daughter. “It’s hard not to take it personally that he doesn’t want to come. So I guess it’s your kid. The weather will get better. It’s spring. Go to her in the backyard. Call her,” Janelle says to the cameras.
“I feel really bad for Yse because I have to choose between her father and her friends,” says Janelle in the interview. “It frustrates me that Kody is like, ‘If you go to school, I can’t see you.’ I find that ridiculous,” she says.
And during the family’s Zoom reunion, Janelle struggles not to offer her opinion on Kody’s strict coronavirus rules. “But I was wondering, Kody, when do you feel like you can have a normal life again?” Janelle asks Kody after the call.
She admits it “crosses a line” to ask her husband. “But it frustrates me so much I can’t keep my mouth shut,” she concludes.
Meanwhile, Kody is frustrated by Janelle and Christine’s inability to abide by his strict rules, calling out their “sarcasm” and “snotty attitude.” Robyn thinks Ysabel should have a relationship with her father, but feels her decision to go back to school is “really, really stupid.”
As sister wives Fans know this isn’t the first time Janelle and Christine have been outraged at how Kody neglected to be there for Ysabel. In season 16, when Ysabel had her major back surgery to correct her scoliosis, Kody chose to stay in Flagstaff because Robyn’s children would miss him in the many weeks it would take. It will be interesting to see whether or not Kody keeps his side of the bargain and meets up with Ysabel in the backyard.
