Jeremy Renner wrote suicide note to family after snow plow accident

“If I were there alone, it would be like this [have] was a horrible way to die. And certainly I would have done that. Surely. But I wasn’t alone.”

As Jeremy Renner returns to public life after recovering from his high-profile snowplow accident earlier this year, the “Hawkeye” star will discuss his experience in a sitdown with Diane Sawyer, which premieres this week.

In a new pre-clip released the day before the interview premiered, Renner discussed his experience at the hospital and revealed he had written a suicide note to his family while they were in critical condition.

Renner’s accident happened on New Year’s Day at his property near Reno, Nevada. Renner was hit by his Sno-Cat – a 14,330-pound snowplow – while trying to rescue his nephew who was stuck in the snow. Renner was hospitalized for blunt chest trauma and over 30 broken bones.

“If I was there alone, that would be it [have] was a horrible way to die. And certainly I would have done that. Surely. But I wasn’t alone. It was my nephew. Sweet Alex. And the rest of the cavalry came,” Renner says in the clip. “I’m jotting down notes on my phone – last words to my family,” he adds, while breaking into tears.

Following his injuries, Renner shared updates on his recovery via social media, including an Instagram post thanking fans for their well wishes and a light-hearted video of his sister and mother taking him to the ICE for a “spa.” -Day” invited.

However, speaking about his time in the hospital in his interview, Renner admitted that he was stressed about how the injuries would affect him permanently: “What will my body be like? Am I going to be just a backbone and a brain, like a science experiment?” Speaking of his recovery, the actor said, “I made a choice to survive. It won’t kill me, no way. I lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience, but I was refueled and replenished with love and titanium.”

The special also includes a recording of the 911 call made for Renner following the accident; In the clip, a caller can be heard saying, “Someone got run over by a sno-cat. Hurry up. He’s down. Paramedics, send ambulance. You might want to get a rescue flight here immediately. He’s in rough shape.”

“Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph” will air April 6 on ABC beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET. Renner will make his first major public appearance next week at the premiere of his Disney+ series Rennervations in Los Angeles.
