Jim Cramer says you should consider these five high-yield stocks to upgrade your portfolio

CNBC’s Jim Cramer on Monday gave investors a list of five “accidentally high returns” that he believes will offer investors sanctuary in the currently unpredictable market.

“In the depths of [2008] The financial crisis gave you an amazing opportunity to buy the inadvertently high-yielding companies…real companies with stable dividends whose stocks had fallen so far that their dividend yields were ridiculously high compared to the old days. This moment will be similar,” said the “Mad Money” host.

“It pays to stay in the stock market as long as you stick with the right groups and avoid the wrong ones — the wrong ones are unprofitable tech companies or other highly rated momentum stocks that have long since lost momentum,” he added.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.08% on Monday, while the S&P 500 fell 0.39%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 1.2%.

Cramer previously compiled a list of high-yielding stocks in March, highlighting ten names he thought investable.

“Of these, [Simon Property Group is] the only one I still feel safe with. … We got in too early and we were too confident about retail. I won’t make that mistake again,” he said. “At the same time, even a high dividend isn’t enough to support a stock in a bad sector.”

“That’s why we need to upgrade our random high-yield portfolio,” he added.

To create his list of randomly high returns, Cramer first looked for names in the S&P 500 to stick with the “biggest large caps.” He identified stocks that meet the following criteria:

  • Has no yield below 3.5%
  • 25% or more below their highs

With 21 names that fit his terms — including Simon Property Group and Morgan Stanley, two names that were on his most recent list of high-yield stocks — Cramer stayed on, narrowing the list down to five stocks.

Here is the list he made:

  1. Huntington Bank Stocks
  2. shop steward
  3. best buy
  4. jacuzzi
  5. digital real estate

Disclosure: Cramer’s Charitable Trust owns shares in Morgan Stanley.
