“Friends could see the breakup between the two had been going on for some time and their connection just didn’t seem the same as it had in the past,” the source says of Jonas, 34, and Turner, 27. “Joe left not many people realize that their problems extend beyond that and that they have struggled with their marriage for longer than they care to admit.”

Jonas filed for divorce on Tuesday, September 5, after multiple reports circulated that a split between him and Turner was imminent. In his filing, Jonas said his marriage to Turner was “broken beyond repair.”

The petition also states that Jonas and Turner’s two children reside with Jonas in Miami, but it is “in the best interests of the minor children that the parties share parental responsibilities.” (The two share daughter Willa, 3, and another 14-month-old daughter, whose name has not been released publicly.)

A day later, the estranged couple opened up about their split in a joint statement shared via Instagram. “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to end our marriage amicably,” they said on Wednesday, September 6. “There’s a lot of speculative narratives out there as to why, but it’s really a shared decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can. Respect our desires for privacy for ourselves and our children.”

According to the insider, part of the problem was the couple’s busy schedules. Jonas is currently on a world tour with the Jonas Brothers, while Turner is frequently called off on film and TV shoots as their latest project is filmed in the UK. Still, some friends of the duo thought there was still hope.

“Joe and Sophie haven’t been spending much time together lately, but their friends haven’t given it much thought,” the source said. “They assumed that all married couples go through ups and downs and that they would make it.”

Speculation about the duo’s relationship status has been mounting since they sold their Miami home for $15 million last month. They purchased the six-bedroom, nine-bathroom property in September 2021 for $11 million and listed it in November 2022 at an asking price of nearly $17 million.

Fans later noted that Turner was absent from many stops on the Jonas Brothers tour while his brothers’ wives, Priyanka Chopra Jonas And Danielle Jonaswere present.

For his part, Joe was spotted without his wedding ring last month but then posted a photo of himself with his ring, apparently in response to rumors surrounding his marriage. The black and white snapshot, uploaded on Monday September 4th, clearly showed his left hand but did not include a caption.
