I think it surprises people. Even now, I hear someone talk about my place in fashion or whatever, and people say, ‘This guy?’ The sloppy guy from Superbad?’”
Not only has Hill been pigeonholed in terms of displaying his personal style — he’s also struggled to break out of the comedic roles pigeonhole. “When I first started doing dramas as an actor, people were like, ‘Keep your lane, dude, keep your lane.’ And I resisted it from a young age. …And then when people started writing about my fashion sense, the same thing happened,” he said 22 Jump Street star explained. “And then I’m like, ‘Wait, how many times do I have to tell myself I can’t do something?’ I’ve done all these things that I’ve been told I can’t do. Just keep going, just embark on the journey you’re on.’”
After years of struggling with his self-image, Hill revealed that he’s finally reached a point where he’s no longer afraid of what other people think of him. “I think as you grow as a person and as an artist, you naturally develop a better sense of self,” he told the outlet. “The idea was to realize that whether I’m big or small, I really can define my own personal style. I think it’s a drug wave that’s happening in culture right now.”
