Justin Fashanu’s niece says her uncle warmly welcomed Jake Daniel’s decision to come out as gay

Daniels was the first male professional UK player to come out as gay since Fashanu in 1990. The first black footballer to ask a £1million transfer fee, Fashanu played for Hearts in the 1993/94 season and sadly took his own life in 1998 at the age of 37.

Amal Fashanu, Founder of the Justin Fahanu Foundation, said: “The Justin Fahanu Foundation would like to commend Jake for the immense courage he has shown today in taking this step to make his sexuality public. First and foremost, this is an important moment for Jake and it’s wonderful to see that his friends and family have been so supportive.

“If my Uncle Justin were still alive, I know he would have been one of the first to reach out to Jake to offer his support and best wishes. Justin’s desire was to create a society where people could just be kinder to each other and where bigotry doesn’t exist.

“Jake’s announcement will be of great comfort to many footballers at all levels of the game – from grassroots to the professional leagues – who are still secretly living as gay and still feel unable to come out. I really hope that this announcement marks a turning point and that other footballers who wish to do so feel they can speak more openly about their lives off the field.

“The sad reality is that there is still a lot of homophobia in the game, on all levels. Until the authorities take more decisive and decisive action, I am afraid that many players will continue to live in hiding, mistakenly believing that they have something to be ashamed of. Homophobia in the game needs to be treated with the zero tolerance approach that racism rightly receives. Only then will we possibly see more players like Jake willing to step out of the shadows – and live the life they truly desire.”

The foundation was established in memory of Justin Fashanu to fight racism and promote positive mental health in football.
