Kansas bakery owner paid from $19 for a case of eggs to $97: ‘It’s brutal’

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KABC) — You’ve probably noticed that the price of eggs at your local grocery store has skyrocketed – if you can even find a carton.

The shortage is posing a massive dilemma for consumers across the country, but one bakery owner in Kansas said his business has been hit.

“The price of sugar is up about 60-70%, flour is up 80%,” said Robert Duensing, who owns the Best Regards bakery in Overland Park, Kansas.

Due to recent economic inflation, Duensing is struggling to get the basics, including flour, sugar and eggs.

In 2021, he said he paid about $17 for a case of eggs. His last order was $97.

In the year to November, unadjusted for seasonal variations, egg prices rose 49%, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Since the beginning of this year, a deadly bird flu has been reducing the number of poultry – especially turkeys and laying hens. This is one reason for the inexorable rise in prices. But the situation has been exacerbated by increased feed and energy costs for producers in addition to high demand in the supermarket.

Duensing said his suppliers told him the flu and transportation issues were the main reasons for the shortage.

He even had to eliminate certain items from his menu.

“Cream puffs and eclairs. We’d have to sell them for $12 each, and I’m just not going to do that,” Duensing said. Instead, he said he and his staff are focusing on items that require fewer eggs to produce.

He admits it was painful to watch the dramatic rise in egg prices. At one point he even considered getting his own chickens. Unfortunately, he said that wasn’t entirely practical.

“I should have enough eggs for 1,200 hens a week,” Duensing said.

Experts believe it has peaked, but until these conditions improve expect to pay more for eggs at the grocery store.
