Those vampire eyes? Of course, these are done with contact lenses on the actors’ eyes.
Ian Somerhalder joked in a video interview in the makeup chair: “I cry like a two year old over these things [the contact lenses] go in.” Dobrev likened her experience with the contact lenses to having 20 lashes in your eye at once. Ouch!
The reason for the pain was that the lenses covered most of the eye, which didn’t leave much room for eye movement. So if you see the actors’ eyes watering or turning red, maybe it’s not fake.
Although it wasn’t painful, Dobrev’s contract stipulated that she was not allowed to wear nail polish for makeup, as the actress was forbidden from altering her appearance as it could affect her character.
