Kate Middleton to Princess Diana – The royals were blinded ten times in the cinema

Regal glamor rarely meets its Hollywood counterpart, but there are occasions when they stand side by side – and neither party wants to be outshone.

On rare occasions, a film will receive a royal film premiere in London, usually in aid of a charity run by the royal family member in attendance. Queen Elizabeth II has attended some of these, as has Princess Diana. Now it’s Kate Middleton’s turn to shine on the red carpet.

Just five days before her wedding to Prince Charles, Diana attended a royal premiere for the first time to see the James Bond film For your eyes only with Roger Moore. Diana wowed the crowds in a sparkling red and gold gown by designers Belleville Sassoon and was joined by Charles and his aunt, Princess Margaret.

During a 1985 royal tour in Melbourne, Australia, Diana wore a metallic silver Bruce Oldfield gown to a film premiere of the historical drama Burke and Wills. Diana attended the event with Prince Charles on November 1, 1985 and was introduced to the stars of the film after the performance.

On June 29, 1987, Diana and Charles attended the premiere of the James Bond film The living daylights. Diana wore a typical 1980s princess dress designed by David Emanuel, the maker of her wedding dress. Diana included the dress in the charity auction she held at Christie’s before her death in 1997.

On September 19, 1981, Diana attended the premiere for stepping out specially arranged to support children’s charities, which she patronizes. The princess wore an elegant one-shoulder gown commissioned by designer Catherine Walker during a state visit to Brazil. Diana met the film’s star, Liza Minelli, and the two struck up an engaged chat in front of the assembled press.

In the last year of her life, Diana attended the film premiere of Sir Richard Attenborough In love and war. Attenborough was a close personal friend of the Princess and the evening had been arranged in aid of the British Red Cross anti-personnel mine campaign – a cause Diana had dedicated her last months to. She wore a blue Catherine Walker gown with lace detailing.

Kate showed off her royal sparkle that night by wearing a set of diamonds reportedly given to her by Prince Charles as a wedding present.

At the 2019 premiere of Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King, Meghan wowed in a chic and elegant black cocktail dress by designer Jason Wu. The gown’s sheer neckline and sleeve details were complemented by Meghan’s simple styling.
