Kate Winslet thought she died holding her breath in Avatar 2

“I have the video of me showing up and saying, ‘Am I dead, have I died?’ said Winslet, who beat Tom Cruise’s previous record.

Kate Winslet thought she literally spent seven minutes in the sky after holding her breath underwater for a record-breaking time.

The Avatar: The Way of Water star revealed she assumed she was “dead” after taking a breath at seven minutes and 15 seconds. Winslet broke Tom Cruise’s previous record.

“I have the video of me showing up and saying, ‘Am I dead, have I died?’ And then: ‘What was [my time]?’” Winslet told Total Film magazine (via Games Radar). “I immediately wanted to know my time. And I couldn’t believe it… The next thing I say is, ‘We’ve got to make radio.’ I wanted Jim to know right away.”

Director James Cameron joked, “She’s not competitive at all.”

Titanic alumna Winslet continued, “Well, I didn’t have to hold my breath for more than seven minutes. It was just that the opportunity presented itself to set a record. I wanted to break my own record, which was already six minutes and 14 seconds. And I said, ‘Come on!’ So I broke my own record by a minute.”

Avatar visionary Cameron was determined to pare down the dry-for-wet sea scenes and make the water sequences as authentic as possible for the sequel. The entire cast of Avatar: The Way of Water was trained to be a professional scuba diver, and Cameron developed new technology to film motion capture scenes underwater, something that had never been achieved before.

But for filming actors underwater, nothing beats the original.

“I said, ‘This isn’t going to work. It won’t look real,’” Cameron recalled. “I even had them do a test where we sensed dry for wet and then sensed in water, a rough level of our sensing in the water. And it wasn’t even close.”

Cameron previously told The New York Times, “Kate is a demon for prep, so she clung to freediving as something to build her character around. Kate’s character is someone who grew up underwater as an ocean-adapted Na’vi—they’re so physically different from the forest navi that we’d almost classify them as a subspecies. So she had to be absolutely calm underwater, and it turned out she was a natural.”
