Kevin McCarthy pours cold water on retirement rumors

A spokesman for Congressman Kevin McCarthy confirmed this Newsweek that the former speaker does not resign.

Rumors began circulating Friday after reports that the California Republican is considering ending his term early before running for re-election in November 2024, according to sources familiar with the matter who have spoken to him Politically and CNN. McCarthy was ousted from the speaker’s chair in a historic House vote on Tuesday.

When reached by NewsweekHowever, McCarthy spokeswoman Brittany Martinez said via email: “McCarthy is not resigning.”

KGET News reporter Eytan Wallace also reported on X, formerly Twitter, that McCarthy confirmed he will seek re-election after his current term.
