Killing Eve Showrunner to Write Andrew Lloyd Webber’s New Bad Cinderella

A promising young woman sets out on the Great White Way.

Emerald Fennell, the Emmy, Oscar, and BAFTA-winning writer, director, and actress kill Eve, Promising young woman and The crown will team up with theater legend Andrew Lloyd Webber to reinvent the ball’s glassy beauty Evil Cinderella.

“We are honored to bring this modern day Cinderella story to Broadway and it is a dream come true to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber, particularly on a score that is among his very best,” said Christine Schwarzman, President of No Guarantees Productions , said in a statement on Monday, October 3. “Working with this extraordinary creative team, we have created a new Cinderella for today’s audience. It’s so joyful and unique; we can’t wait to share it!”

The publication states: “This modern retelling of the classic fairy tale is set in the extraordinarily beautiful kingdom of Belleville. Our Cinderella is no longer the damsel in distress in need of rescue. She finds herself and her prince in new circumstances that make her reconsider what “happily ever after” really means.

Fennell has made a career of turning stories on their head and asking complex questions with difficult answers, most notably in her 2020 rape revenge drama Promising young woman, which starred Carey Mulligan. Mulligan was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of a woman who sacrifices (and sacrifices) her life to exact punishment for sex criminals and their toxic allies.

Lindsay Genao, who will play Cinderella, said: “I’ve dreamed of getting a starring role on Broadway for most of my life, but never in my wildest dreams could I have ever imagined realizing that dream alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber and such an incredible team of employees. As a proud Dominican American, I am thrilled to have this opportunity to represent my community and show the world that fairy tales do come true – and are for everyone. My heart is bursting.”

The announcement comes a few weeks after the announcement that Webber’s Phantom of the operathe longest-running show on Broadway, would wrap up in February.
