LA Mayor’s race: Congresswoman Karen Bass would lean on federal government to help tackle homelessness crisis

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Marcia Fudge, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, at the invitation of Congresswoman Karen Bass, who is running for mayor of Los Angeles, spent the day Thursday touring affordable housing areas in the city, along with aid programs The Homeless people stay off the streets.

“This is the epicenter of homelessness, Los Angeles,” Fudge said. “Any time a nation cannot look after its most vulnerable people, it has failed.”

Bass — one of the leading candidates for mayor — believes the homeless crisis is an emergency and hopes Fudge would use her visit to learn about some of the city’s challenges.

“…especially with coupons,” Bass said. “The need for flexibility in coupons and coupon renewals.”

Fudge told reporters that although the federal government will never be able to build all the affordable housing needed, it got the message it could do more, including using coupons and removing unnecessary regulations.

It’s something that’s at the heart of Bass’s campaign, using her ties with the federal government to increase her involvement in efforts to end homelessness.

“We wanted some of the specifics of LA [Fudge] To understand that, we also wanted to brag that there are so many people here who are doing such a good job but just can’t scale because the problem here is so huge,” Bass said.

Meanwhile, Eyewitness News met developer Rick Caruso, Bass’ main antagonist, while he was fighting at Grand Central Market in downtown LA.

He said he also has connections in Washington but believes LA needs a mayor who knows how to lead.

“This whole ‘I’m going to spend time in Washington’ idea [Bass] spent a lot of time in Washington. We need someone who really knows this city,” Caruso said.

Everyone, including Fudge, agrees the federal government hasn’t done enough to help LA end homelessness.

Bass said that now that she has administration in Washington willing to work with her, more affordable housing will come our way.
