Laurence Fishburne: I was hoping Matrix Resurrections would be better

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was,” Fishburne said diplomatically.

Laurence Fishburne didn’t hold back as he shared his real Thoughts on mind-altering “matrix resurrections”.

Fishburne, who previously played Morpheus in the franchise, told Variety that he didn’t fail to reprise his role for the fourth film, which premiered in 2021.

“No, not really,” Fishburne said at the premiere of his latest film, The School for Good and Evil, on Netflix. “It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. And it wasn’t as good as I had hoped.”

Instead, Fishburne applauded former co-stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss’ respective performances as Neo and Trinity.

“I thought Carrie-Anne and Keanu really did their thing. Yeah, I thought so,” Fishburne said.

Neither Fishburne nor Hugo Weaving returned for Resurrections, having played Morpheus and Agent Smith in the original trilogy. However, artificial intelligence versions of her characters were combined for new roles, which were filled by franchise newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jonathan Groff.

“Resurrections” divided film critics, with IndieWire’s David Ehrlich hailing director Lana Wachowski’s vision of “going beyond the dopamine hit of cheap nostalgia and daring to envision a future where mainstream films could inspire us to express ourselves.” to re-imagine what is possible instead of just asking ourselves to clap at the sight of history repeating itself.”

The producers of The Matrix have indicated that Resurrections will be the final installment in the franchise.

Following the sit-down of Resurrections, Fishburne will reunite with The Matrix alum Reeves for John Wick: Chapter 4, due out in 2023.

Meanwhile, The Matrix is being adapted into a stage play, directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle. A hip-hop version of the franchise created by the Wachowskis is titled Free Your Mind. Licensed by Warner Bros. Theater Ventures, the project is scheduled to open in October 2023 at the new Factory International arts center in Manchester, UK.

“By combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest in immersive design, ‘Free Your Mind’ will take audiences on an exhilarating journey through ‘The Matrix’ and into a new realm of possibility,” reads the logline. “This eye-popping production will span, respond to, and harness the collective energy of the moment within the building’s ultra-flexible spaces.”

The Matrix was first released in 1999. The Wachowskis directed the first three films in the franchise, with Lana Wachowski directing The Matrix Resurrections alone.
