LAX expects 214,500 passengers on Sunday, one of the busiest days of the airport’s holiday travel season

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles International Airport officials said about 214,500 passengers will pass through the facility on one of the busiest days of the holiday travel season.

“LAX wishes our guests, employees and partners a very Merry Christmas as we create a seamless and enjoyable travel experience,” said Justin Erbacci, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports. “We ask that you come prepared to the airport by planning your parking space in advance and arriving early, especially if you’re traveling with us on one of our peak travel days.”

Christmas airport crowds can be more difficult to predict than Thanksgiving crowds because the holiday falls on a different day of the week each year and flight travel patterns are often dictated by the work week.

But just as the Sunday after Thanksgiving tends to draw large crowds, the days just after Christmas are very popular. And just as few people travel on Thanksgiving Day itself, relatively few people travel on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

Here’s a look at Christmas and the seven calendar dates before and after over the past three years, ranked by most to least average air travelers across the country based on TSA checkpoint data:

– 27 Dec (most crowded).

– 23rd of December.

– 20th of December.

– December 26th.

– 30th of December.

– 19. December.

– December 29th.

– December 22.

– December 28th.

– 21st December.

– December 18th.

– January 1 (New Year).

– December 24 (Christmas Eve).

– December 31 (New Year’s Eve).

– December 25 (Christmas Day) (least crowded).

The 2022 holiday travel season will be different as Hanukkah, which begins on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar, closely coincides with Christmas. While the eight-day celebration sometimes takes place in November or early December, this year it begins on December 18th and lasts until December 26th.

There is also the week-long celebration of Kwanzaa, which runs from December 26th to January 1st. As such, travelers may celebrate more than just Christmas during this time and may concentrate more holiday crowds at airports than other years.

What’s more, one of the busiest travel days of the year, December 23 – the day before Christmas Eve – happens to fall on a Friday this year. As you will recall, Friday is typically the busiest travel day in any given week. December 23rd is not an official holiday, but many holidaymakers are able to leave on this day.
