Liam Neeson is voicing Qui-Gon Jinn on Disney+ despite quitting TV

The actor previously voiced the Jedi Master in three episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Liam Neeson returns to a galaxy far, far away. At least for one episode.

Lucasfilm announced new projects left and right at this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, including Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. Set to stream on Disney+ this fall, the animated anthology will consist of one-off episodes exploring the backstories of popular characters from the Star Wars franchise. Characters featured include Count Dooku, Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker, and Ahsoka. One particularly high-profile episode focuses on Qui-Gon Jinn, the Jedi Master portrayed by Liam Neeson in The Phantom Menace. And on the panel announcing the series, producer Dave Filoni revealed that Neeson himself would voice the character.

While the news is certainly exciting for many fans, the announcement directly contradicts Neeson’s recent stance on the return to Star Wars. The actor made headlines in April when he was asked if he was interested in reprising his role as Qui-Gon Jinn. At a time when even the biggest movie stars are sprinting to high-profile television appearances, Neeson said he remains a movie purist and would prefer to keep his “Star Wars” efforts on the big screen.

“Oh, I think so, yes, yes, yes, I think so…if it were a movie,” Neeson said. “Yeah, I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to TV, I have to admit, I just like the big screen, you know?”

Die-hard fans were quick to point out that he had appeared as Qui-Gon Jinn in three episodes of the TV show Star Wars: The Clone Wars in the past. Some thought he’d changed his mind about animated shows, but the actor is clearly still willing to do so.

And while Neeson has never landed a major television role, he has recently begun to delve into live-action television work, having a memorable cameo appearance on “Atlanta” this season and in two episodes of “Derry Girls.” occurred. But for now, at least, a live-action Qui Gon Jinn series seems out of the question. It seems that Neeson’s current policy is to only don the Jedi costume for a theatrical film.
