Lindsey Buckingham confronted Mick Fleetwood long before her affair with Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood tried to keep their affair a secret, but Lindsey Buckingham saw it coming. Long before they fell in love, Buckingham sensed something was happening between the two. Fleetwood told Buckingham that he didn’t know what he was talking about, but later fell in love with Nicks. He said that she immediately felt like a soul mate.

Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks dated before joining Fleetwood Mac
After meeting as high school students, Nicks and Buckingham got back together when he invited her to join his band Fritz. The group found success in the Bay Area, but Nicks and Buckingham had higher ambitions. They decided that the best path to success was to pursue music as a duo. When they left their band, they also started dating.
“It was like, ‘Well, we’ve done it now,'” she told Rolling Stone. “‘We’ve screwed up her life forever now. So why not?’ That’s how we became a couple.”
They fought in Los Angeles for several years before their big break when Fleetwood invited them to join Fleetwood Mac.
He predicted the affair between Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood
Nick and Buckingham’s relationship didn’t survive the maelstrom of cocaine and infidelity that was Fleetwood Mac. They split while writing and recording their second album with the band. However, Buckingham predicted that something was going on between Nicks and Fleetwood before that. He asked Fleetwood about it during their first tour with the band.
“On this new band’s first tour, we stayed at the original Holiday Inn, the oldest, somewhere in Texas. It was a real dump,” Fleetwood said, according to the book Gold Dust Woman: The Biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis. “I ended up in Lindsey’s room after the gig. It was the first time I sat around with Lindsey and got stoned man to man. I quit smoking years ago, and needless to say I got pounded on this joint we share. Keep in mind that these are the new band’s earliest days. We’re both sitting in the fog, and out of the blue he turned to me and said, ‘That’s you and Stevie, isn’t it?'”

Fleetwood was shocked, noting that Buckingham’s words were like “a bolt of lightning”. At this point, he barely knew Nicks and wasn’t sure what Buckingham was talking about.
“I didn’t understand that,” he explained, adding, “I hardly knew her. I could only stammer something like what do you mean? Lindsey didn’t actually answer, but it was clear that he felt like something was going on between me and Stevie Nicks. Then the moment passed and it was never mentioned again between us.”
Eventually, Nicks and Fleetwood agreed with Buckingham when they had an affair.
“Did I fall in love with her right away?” Fleetwood said, according to the book Stevie Nicks: Visions, Dreams and Rumors by Zoe Howe. “I don’t know, but she immediately felt like a soul mate.”
Stevie Nicks said there will always be a connection between her and Lindsey Buckingham
Nicks and Buckingham’s tumultuous relationship didn’t end with their romance. Over the next few decades, they continued to fight fiercely and cautiously forgave one another. Nicks said that this is because the bond between them will never die.
“This electric, mad attraction between Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks never dies, never will die, will never go away,” she told MTV in 2009. “He’s married, he’s happy, he has three wonderful children who I love. You know, he’s found a good, happy, quiet and safe place – but who Lindsey and I are to each other will never change.”
