Live updates on Johnny Depp trial: Amber Heard cross-examined over fights

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Attorneys for Johnny Depp have questioned the veracity of Amber Heard’s claim that Depp sexually assaulted her with a liquor bottle.

Heard was questioned Tuesday after testifying in Depp’s defamation lawsuit against her.

Depp is suing Heard in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia over a December 2018 comment she wrote in The Washington Post in which she described herself as “a public figure who advocates domestic violence.” His lawyers say he was defamed by the article, although he never mentioned his name. The process is now in its fifth week.

Depp’s attorney, Camille Vasquez, questioned Heard about a series of incidents in which she says she was assaulted by Depp.

The scrutiny was particularly intense over a fight the couple had in Australia in March 2015, shortly after they married while Depp was filming a fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

During that fight, Heard said she was sexually assaulted. Depp, on the other hand, says he was the victim and lost the tip of his middle finger when Heard threw a vodka bottle at him.

Vasquez questioned why Heard never sought medical attention, although she said her feet were cut by broken glass and she was bleeding after the attack.

“You’re the one who attacked someone with a bottle in Australia, aren’t you, Ms. Heard?” Vasquez asked.

“I didn’t attack Johnny in Australia. I never attacked Johnny,” Heard replied.

Vasquez then asked why Heard Depp wrote a series of love letters in the months following her attack.

Heard has said she believes Depp hit rock bottom and committed to sobriety after the fight in Australia. She said most of the assaults occurred while Depp was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“When things were good, they were really good,” she said.
