SNL Emmy-winner Rudolph is executive producer of the AppleTV+ workplace comedy, which also stars Adam Scott and Joel Kim Booster.
Maya Rudolph has 87 billion reasons to start over after becoming the world’s most famous cuckold in new workplace comedy AppleTV+ series Loot, which airs June 24.
The 10-episode series was written and created by Alan Yang (“Master of None”) and Matt Hubbard (“30 Rock”), and executive produced with lead actor and Saturday Night Live Emmy winner Rudolph.
“Loot” revolves around Molly Novak (Rudolph) who finds out her gorgeous husband (Adam Scott) is cheating on her. In the wake of her divorce, Molly’s life is in shambles — and no amount of yachting, private jets to St. Barts, or crying in a giant candy room are going to fulfill her very rich but very lonely life. So Molly turns to her charitable empire to find herself in charity work and put all the divorce money to good use.
“Pose” Emmy-winner Michaela Jaé Rodriguez plays Sofia Salinas, executive director of a charitable foundation tasked with using Molly’s fame to reinvent the nonprofit. Fire Island writer and star Joel Kim Booster plays Nicholas, Molly’s personal assistant, who also stars Nat Faxon and Ron Funches.
Aside from her Emmy-winning performance in Big Mouth and a recent cameo in her husband Paul Thomas Anderson’s Oscar-nominated Licorice Pizza, Rudolph has two other animated series in the works: Amazon Prime Videos star-studded The Hospital. alongside Natasha Lyonne, Kieran Culkin and Keke Palmer, as well as the Disney+ Big Hero 6 spin-off Baymax!.
Rudolph was announced last year as another partnership with The Hospital co-star Lyonne to adapt Irish indie horror comedy Extra Ordinary into a half-hour comedy series for TBS. The film centers on a ghostbusting couple whose existence is threatened when a family with supernatural powers moves to their small town.
Just don’t compare Extra Ordinary to the “female version of Ghostbusters,” which starred Rudolph’s “SNL” colleague Kristen Wiig.
“There’s no question that when you start hearing more than once that something is the female ‘hangover,'” Rudolph previously told Entertainment Weekly as she reflected on her comedy career, particularly the 10th anniversary from Bridesmaids. “As if ‘The Hangover’ was the cinematic equivalent of the comedy ‘Citizen Kane.’ These are two completely different films, folks! You’re talking about a group of women, a group of people who know their weight, know their value in comedy.”
Looking to the future, Rudolph also directs the long-awaited Enchanted sequel, Disenchanted, set 10 years after fairytale princess Giselle (Amy Adams) happily ever after with real-life bachelor Robert (Patrick Dempsey). James Marsden, Idina Menzel and Yvette Nicole Brown also star in the musical film.
“Loot” premieres June 24 on AppleTV+.
