LOS FELIZ (KABC) — On Monday, Los Angeles City Council Member Nithya Raman went on a drive with Healthcare in Action. It is a non-profit organization that provides mobile medical care to the homeless.
Raman’s office made a $5,000 grant to the nonprofit earlier this year.
“As a municipality, I think that in this way we can really try to fill some of the gaps that we see particularly in LA County’s health and mental health services,” Raman said.
Healthcare in Action provides medical services with a well-equipped van, allowing a medical assistant and social worker to meet patients wherever they are.
“We offer both social service navigation and home navigation, and that’s integrated with our medical coverage,” said Robert Finch, physician assistant at Healthcare in Action.
According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, more than 15,000 homeless people in LA County are struggling with a serious mental illness.
Michael Hochman, CEO of Healthcare in Action, said they approach mental illness with the same urgency as any other medical issue.
“One of our ulterior motives in this work is to gain confidence through medical care to stabilize patients,” Hochman said.
