Los Angeles County unionized nurses win temporary employment contracts to avert a strike

LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Days before they were due to go on a picket line, thousands of nurses in the Los Angeles County health system have reached an interim employment contract that will avert a strike, their union announced Thursday.

Nearly 7,000 nurses, represented by Service Employees International Union Local 721, were scheduled to wage a three-day strike beginning next Wednesday, affecting facilities at the county’s Department of Health, the Department of Public Health and the Department of Mental Health.

Full details of the interim labor pact were not immediately released, but union officials said it “includes stronger job protections … and locks in competitive pay.”

“Our LA County nurses have made incredible sacrifices on the front lines, so we negotiated hard,” SEIU 721 President David Green said in a statement. “That’s why it was so important to us to negotiate not just for better compensation, but for a real plan that addresses caregiver retention.

“COVID has impacted our ranks, already badly hit by years of public health underfunding. Now we are committed to addressing this issue and we have the power of our union to ensure the plan is implemented. ”

Union members have yet to ratify the proposed deal, with voting expected to start in early June.

Coral Itzcalli, communications director for the district department of health services, said the district was “pleased” that a proposed settlement was reached.

“Our nurses have done what they can for our patients and community during the pandemic, and good faith negotiations between the LA County CEO’s office and the union made it possible to reach a fair and amicable settlement that safeguards patient care, employees.” of healthcare and ultimately maintains our heartfelt appreciation for our healthcare workers who provide world-class patient care,” said Itzcalli.
