Luca Guadagnino receives the Sundance International Icon Award

The Bones and All filmmaker is honored alongside Ryan Coogler, W. Kamau Bell and Nikyatu Jusu.

The Sundance Institute announced that Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino will receive the International Icon Award at Opening Night: A Taste of Sundance, presented by IMDbPro, on January 19 in Park City. Guadagnino will join the evening’s previously announced honorees, including Ryan Coogler, W. Kamau Bell and Nikyatu Jusu. The 2023 Sundance Film Festival will be held January 19-29 in-person in Park City, Salt Lake City and the Sundance Resort, along with a selection of films available online nationwide January 24-29.

According to the festival, this award recognizes an international author who creates distinctive cinematic universes and has had a lasting impact on filmmaking, primarily through his dedication to storytelling and unwavering creative vision. Guadagnino is a writer, director and producer who most recently directed Bones and All. He has strong roots in the Sundance community that stretch back over a decade. He made his Sundance debut at the 2010 festival with I Am Love, which he wrote, directed and produced. In 2017, Guadagnino returned to the festival with the premiere of his Oscar-winning film Call Me By Your Name, starring Timothée Chalamet. Guadagnino also produced the documentary The Truffle Hunters, which screened at the 2020 festival. He has won several awards and has been nominated for several awards including the Venice Film Festival, the BAFTA Golden Lion for Best Director and Nastro d’Argento for Best Director.

“Luca Guadagnino is a true visionary of cinema and we are delighted to honor him with this special award,” said Joana Vicente, CEO of the Sundance Institute. “Whether writing, directing or producing, his unique storytelling skills have had an undeniable impact not only on the Sundance Film Festival community but on the film industry as a whole.”

“Sundance has always felt like home to me; I’ve been to the festival four times,” Guadagnino said. “I especially remember how warmly the festival welcomed ‘Call Me By Your Name’ and how it changed my life. I couldn’t be happier to receive this award.”

Opening Night: A Taste of Sundance presented by IMDbPro will open the 2023 Sundance Film Festival by honoring inspirational and groundbreaking storytellers whose journeys have been connected to Sundance over the years, while raising funds and awareness for the institute. Proceeds are used to support the Institute’s year-round work and uplift global independent voices, both new and established, through artist programs, grants, and other initiatives. The event is also made possible through the generous support of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Acura and Variety. The Sundance Film Festival takes place from January 19th to 29th.
