Man, 84, dies after crashing into a stop sign and then crashing into a tree in Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — An 84-year-old man has died after crashing into a stop sign and subsequently crashing into a tree in Lakeland Sunday afternoon.

According to the Lakeland Police Department, officers were dispatched around 3:35 p.m. near County Line Road and Swindell Road to report a single-vehicle accident.

Shortly before the accident, police said a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling north on County Line Road and approaching the intersection with Swindell Road when the vehicle eventually struck a curb, hit a stop sign and continued drove across Swindell Road before leaving the roadway and hitting a tree.

Upon arrival, police, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and the Lake Fire Department began life-saving operations on the driver, Byron Ihle, 84, of Ocala.

Tragically, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
