Måneskin performed at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday, September 12, one year after the bassist Victoria De Angelis A wardrobe malfunction made headlines.
The Italian rock band – consisting of De Angelis, 23, singer Damiano Daviddrummer Ethan Torchio and guitarist Thomas Raggi – presented their new single “Honey (Are U Coming?)” at the awards ceremony. The band’s performance was a much tamer production compared to their stage misfortune last year. MTV censored Måneskin’s VMAs performance of “Supermodel” in August 2022 after De Angelis’ black one-shoulder top fell down and exposed her chest. (In addition to airing on MTV, the live show was simulcast on CBS and children’s network Nickelodeon.)
Although she wore a silver pasty over one nipple, her other was naked for those watching at home and the audience. The cameras quickly panned away as she and the band continued playing. A week later, the network released a slightly less filtered version of the performance, with the cameras still focused on De Angelis but her chest was out of focus.

Meanwhile, David joked: “We’re so used to seeing them [breasts]We didn’t even know it was happening.”
While the band initially downplayed the situation, they later pointed out that MTV apparently had no problem with the backless chaps and thong that David appeared in, instead choosing to censor De Angelis’ exposed chest. “It shows that there are still many, many prejudices against rock bands and against women,” said the singer NME the following month. “There is a lot to do and we are trying to do our part.”

Ahead of the 2023 ceremony, De Angelis criticized the VMAs for its apparent double standards. “We’re too hot for US television,” she said The guard in January. “It’s so stupid because they want to seem so open-minded and then they get scared of a few nipples. There’s this difference between men’s and women’s bodies and the way you’re constantly perceived and sexualized. Everyone has nipples.”
David added: “It’s very clear what different standards people have because I was literally naked.”
While the drama of the 2022 VMAs is in the rearview, Måneskin is still used to dealing with negativity. “We’ve always had a lot of disagreement,” David admitted. “There’s a lot of people who love us and are very proud of what we do, and then there’s a whole other part made up of conservatives and traditional rock ‘n’ roll fans and fascists who support us with everything “What they have, they hate.”
