Margot Robbie: ‘Barbie’ set photos leak was shameful

Margot Robbie, actress and producer of ‘Barbie,’ revealed she was ‘shamed’ by the viral set photos of her in her role alongside co-star Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken. During “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” Robbie spoke about the leaked production images while promoting David O. Russell’s “Amsterdam.”

“By the way, I can’t tell you how embarrassed we were,” Robbie said. “We look like we’re laughing and having fun but dying inside. Die. I thought this is the most humbling moment of my life.”

Presenter Jimmy Fallon asked Robbie if she was aware the “Barbie” photos would be dissected after they were posted online.

“No!” said Robbie. “I mean, I knew we had some location shoots in LA. I knew, ok, once you’ve done location shots, you’re going to be screwed. There’s probably going to be a small group of people who will stand out because we stand out a bit in these outfits. So I knew there would be a bit of attention and probably some photos would come out, but not in the way it has been. It was crazy. It was like hundreds of people were watching.”

Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, “Barbie” follows Robbie’s doll as she leaves Barbieland and enters the real world. Along with those paparazzi photos that leaked, Gosling was captured as Ken screaming after Barbie punched a man who was holding her by her butt while she was rollerblading. The neon ensembles of the ’90s that have been circulating all over the internet were created by Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran.

Durran reunited with writer/director Gerwig after collaborating on the costumes for Little Women, for which Durran won her second Oscar (her first was in 2012 for Anna Karenina).

And while Robbie “died inside” during the critically acclaimed production, co-star Gosling teased that his Ken character takes that pain literally: In short, Ken fights. It turns out that the Barbie dream world isn’t all about fun and games.

“This Ken life is even tougher than the ‘Gray Man’ life, I think,” Gosling previously told Entertainment Tonight while promoting his Netflix spy caper. “Ken has no money, he has no job, he has no car, he has no house. He’s going through some things.”

Just don’t think you know anything about “Barbie”. “It’s not what you think it is, unless it is,” Gosling said, always a mystery. “And then you know what it is, but I don’t think it’s what you think it is. Wait, what are we talking about?”

Barbie concluded production in July 2022 with the film slated for a July 2023 release date. You can find all the details about “Barbie” here.
